The usual justification is that it's just a preference, and that my be true in some cases, but the truth is, dark skinned Asians and Arabs face the same prejudice even though they share the same religion, language and culture.
I can understand people "back home" having these prejudices, but I can't understand why people who come to the west, live here and raise their kids here, only to express prejudice and racism against dark skinned individuals. It is as if you don't know the hurt of being mistreated for being brown.
