I've been slow-traveling through Europe over the past few months, with my road bike. By this, I mean I am traveling with my road bike (packed in a travel case). I stay at various locations for at least 2-4 weeks at a time, and spend that time cycling from that location. I just spent two months in Malaga, Spain, which had an infinite amount of great road biking routes. After that, I packed up my bike, traveled to Sardinia, and then spent two weeks cycling there. Now I'm in Tuscany, Italy, and I need to exit the Schengen area by May 2. That's why I'm looking at Ireland to spend a few weeks.
Can anyone suggest a town that would be a good base to ride from? I'd get an apartment or Airbnb for 2-3 weeks, and just do day rides (no bike packing or bike touring) from that town. Obviously, I wouldn't like to rent a car, and I'd like a town that can be the starting point for a lot of routes.
EDIT/UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback. I've decided, at least for week one, to base in Shankill and explore Wicklow. Very excited. I'd also like to explore the Killarney area, as well as the Delphi/Killary area, assuming weather cooperates in May.
EDIT#2: Instead of Shankill, I chose to stay a week in Bray. Shankill is just a residential train stop area, no real town. Bray is a delightful little beachside town with a bunch of pubs/hotels/shops/people. It has been an excellent base for bike rides...been up in the Wicklow Mountains, gorgeous (and no rain!).
