How did the United States and Canada come to know that the plane was shot down a day before Iran?
Maybe the IRI statement meant that the plane had engine problems AFTER it was struck down by a missile?
It is pretty safe to assume that Iran knew immediately that they accidentally shot down the plane. That is why they did not hand over the black boxes which would have shown that it had been shot down. Iran only admitted they shot it down once various independent aviation experts and some countries' own government aviation experts declared that the evidence pointed toward the plane having been shot down. They realized that they no longer could get away with covering it up, so they finally admitted it.
It is very believable that they could have accidentally shot it down thinking it was enemy aircraft with tensions at an almost war time level. Then they made it worse by lying to their own people and the families of those on the plane about it.
