Which phone to buy to travel internationally? (Can sprint be bought at retail price?)

I plan to buy out of contract btw.
According to Apple's LTE page, it seems like I should buy a sprint because it supports the most bands. However, when I browse to the apple store, it doesn't seem like I can pay retail price and buy a sprint phone. It seems like the only model that is contract-free is the T-Mobile version.
