New unlocked phone wont work with old sim

I don’t know much about phones
I purchased an Iphone 12 new in box on sale from bestbuy and going from an Iphone 7 I put my sim card in and it wont make calls, it does work for going on the internet
Anyone know what the problem Could be, I went to the bell store and they gave me a new sim card and said its a problem with the phone to take it to a cell phone repair place
Bestbuy is not much help, brutal to call them
