Why does the Files app on the new M1 iPad just freeze the entire iPad?

iPad M1 12.9 1TB 16GB RAM: this is a joke. My first experience connecting my external drive to the iPad just froze the entire iPad. Even upon navigating away from the Files app, I’m having to kill apps in order to get them to respond to touch; keyboard doesn’t prop up when focused on text fields, close buttons don’t work, gesture navigation blocked. I’m currently writing this on the iPad and just having immense trouble being able to post.

Cannot create new folders, or expect the navigation between drives to work seamlessly. After waiting for like a good 2 minutes, when I tried copying from the drive and pasting into my iPad some magazines, 24 files of a total 900MB, the copy just wouldn’t initiate let alone complete! The icons of the new files will just keep having their loading spinner keep animating. Tapping on the icon opens up an empty file.

External hard drive works absolutely fine on my MacBook, it is a WD 500GB connected using a usb 3.0 to usb c cable. I’ll try and connect my other hard drives to see if it’s just this one.

This is horrific, I am not sure whats going on. Any thoughts? Someone experiencing anything like this?
