When I lock my iPad orientation to portrait, it flips the portrait around

I'm a VoiceOver/braille display user, which shouldn't matter for this post but maybe that's why I'm having this issue? Anyway, I like to keep my iPad in portrait mode, I know that's odd but it's a personal preference. When I lock the orientation, even if I have my iPad in regular portrait mode, it flips the portrait upside down. It reverses my volume buttons and everything! Does anyone know how to fix this?
