iOS Mail - Emails not marked as read when deleted

I have two email accounts set up, one iCloud and the other external. When I delete some emails, they are being marked as unread in the trash (both accounts). When I check the Mail app on my Mac, it shows an unread number next to the accounts in the sidebar, even though the unread emails are in the trash.

This behavior started with iOS 18. In previous versions, deleting emails would always mark them as read. I cannot locate an option to mark deleted emails as read.

Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, have you found a way to change the behavior?
