I think my American-born latino brother-in-law is racist/colorist. I listed examples of things he’s done below. What do you guys think?
Post Body
- [ ] Downplaying accomplishments of anyone black who he think is more successful than himself
- [ ] Negative comments about black people in general with no emotionally-deep relationships with anyone black
- [ ] Told a high-earning, highly-educated, religious, and coherent black family they act white / lied and told sister in law the family said that she acts white / compared his wife to a white woman
- [ ] Frustratedly told his darker-skinned wife he like light-skins (as in to stop showing him pics of women who match her phenotype)
- [ ] Comparing his partner to white people in terms of perceived lifestyle/education/jobs/family structure
- [ ] Chuckled and snarkily told sister in law “What? You’ve never come out dark in a photo before?”
- [ ] Tries to make self-made black women in the 1% look incompetent
- [ ] Too busy to change diapers because he is playing a video game on his phone
- [ ] Does the bare minimum
- [ ] Flung her bonnet saying, “Why are you always leaving this everywhere?”
- [ ] Trying on sister in laws wig without her permission
- [ ] Trying to relocate her away from family/connections, ended up staying local but moved to a town thats 95% white
- [ ] The wife is double out earning him
- [ ] His mother told his wife “Wow your hair is always so poofy?” or “Why don’t you do your nails?”
- [ ] Suggesting sister in law who was holding a butter knife was going to do something with it saying “What? What are you going to do with that knife?”
- [ ] Yelling at her while sister is over
- [ ] Him suggesting that when they first met they probably wouldn’t have been together
- [ ] Asking if i like him when they moved into their house
- [ ] Now she makes significantly more and now’s he’s just doing the dishes sometimes
- [ ] Told sister in law “I feel like you forget that you’re black”
- [ ] Told sister in law her now listening to 2Pac, biggie, etc. effects her ‘blackness’
- [ ] Calling sister in law pretty, not his own wife
- [ ] His wife is now picking on her own sister for things that her own husband doesn’t like about her
- [ ] Commenting on how his son’s hair texture is looser than his mothers
I honestly think he’s EXTREMELY whitewashed and tried to cosplay how he thought black people (mind you we are Haitian and very tied to our culture/values) act/wear/speak but reality hit him after marriage that we identify as Haitian and don’t change ourselves to please white people.
