from what i know the effect of prenatal environment on a developing fetus is huge, it would totally make all subsequent findings about the effect of economic status of the families unreliable

This kinda data was super important though. Back in the day research on heritability was often wrong because a ridiculous amount of the families studied were not actually family to begin with.

Lot's of babies getting swapped and spouses getting cheated on...

So not knowing who your real family is, is not exactly exclusive to them.
