So I sat down on a rock today in western NC to fix an issue with my motorcycle helmet. About two minutes into the repair I start feeling some stings on my left ankle. I looked down and there are lots of ants all over my left legs. I immediately got off the rock and started getting all the ants off me and out of my boot. Got stung a lot. My question is what type of ants could these have been? What I'm reading is the imported fire ants are present in this county but these ants were extremely small compared to what I'm reading about the imported fire ant. They were tiny maybe only being 2 or 3mm in length. They were reddish. Their mound was built under and on the side of the rock I was sitting on. The stings were not extremely bad but definitely noticable. It's been an hour and my leg is extremely itchy and burning. No marks showing at this point. Could these be electric ants?
