My in laws do this thing…

First off, me and my wife has no kids and both my in laws have two each. To make a long story short, every time something gets canceled or plans change they both use this line of “(insert child’s name) is gonna be devastated “ or some other negative emotion as a response to the situation, which in turns gives the others internal anxiety. Is this normal? Or am I over thinking this?
