Back handed compliments
Post Body

Hi Reddit, I'm posting here instead of confronting my MIL and FIL, even though I REALLY want to be confrontational.... I'm over them but I live on their property so I have to play nice (been here 2 years in June)

Little backstory, my partner and I met in California, but they're originally from GA. We dated for 2 years before tying the knot. I married my partner without meeting their parents, because I'm not marrying my in laws I'm married and in love with their child.

2 days after we got married we received an eviction notice from our apartment complex. So we decided to pull the rip cord and moved to GA from WA.

MIL and FIL were accepting at first (as people usually are) however about a week ago my MIL decided to give me a backhanded compliment first thing in the AM, before I had my coffee or cigarette

SHE EVEN WARNED ME ABOUT HOW ITS GONNA SOUND BAD, But she meant it out of "love" she said "I really don't like you, but you are gorgeous when you first wake up and I'm jealous you don't even try to do anything to look pretty"

Ever since then I haven't been able to look at her the same... I grew up with a narcissistic mother, and this bitch is the same fucking way, just more subtle-ish. I think my partners parents really don't like me, but are trying to make an "effort" as they have already lost their child once because of their (MIL&FIL) beliefs.

Ew sheโ€™s a jealous hag. Those โ€œniceโ€ things she does for you like buy you food you like is all for her image and a way for her to weaponize kindness. She must be very insecure. I would stay far away. Limit contact or go no contact once you move out.
