Has anyone eaten alone at a restaurant? How did you become comfortable?

So I am not new to doing things alone and I have enjoyed it (walking in parks, going to movie theaters, going to live music shows).

However, I have never sat in a restaurant alone before. I am moving out of my city soon and I want to try a couple restaurants before I leave, but I feel insecure imagining telling the waiter "table for one" and seeing people staring at the lone person sitting in the booth. Also, I don't want to sit at the bar as I prefer to invest in my phone or kindle rather than force myself through small talk with strangers.

Has anyone dealt with this before?
