We often hear about Intelligent Document Processing (IDP) in the context of pulling data from text-based documents, but there’s so much more potential here, especially for industrial engineers dealing with complex documents like technical drawings and blueprints.
Imagine being able to automatically extract critical details from engineering diagrams and cross-reference them with other project specs or technical data, all in a fraction of the time. This could dramatically speed up workflows, especially when preparing estimates or ensuring compliance with standards, making everything run more efficiently.
Take component manufacturing, for instance. Engineers often deal with thousands of diagrams. If IDP can accurately process all that in one go, it would seriously improve productivity and reduce the chances of errors.
This tech is already out there, and it’s making a real difference. I’m curious—what’s the best IDP use case you’ve seen in your work that’s helped streamline your processes?
I've had some experience with IDP. They were shitty. Most often used abbreviations, they ignored those.
In manufacturing tolerancing is extremely important, and it is very much so in mensuration too. IDP we were trialing sucked at the tolerance portion.
Now, for a RFQ and RFP documents, they were not useful either as they missed out a lot on electricals and controls side especially on the RFQs.
My takeaway? The IDP has to be trained by the engineering team in the specific area they want to use it for.
