Has anyone eaten raw papaw before? We think it's ripe because we got it to fall off of the tree. Is it dangerous to eat if it's not ripe, or dangerous to eat raw in general?
I've eaten blackberries before so I'm not super afraid of eating a bug or anything. I'm not aware of any parasites that would be in the fruit or anything. I was under the impression the only parasites around here are giardia and leptospirosis but you basically have to drink straight out of the white river to get those from what I understand. And I mean there's probably a risk of E. coli or salononella but idk if papaw fruit has a high risk of that, and we are going to wash the outside first.
Edit: Also if anyone wants the seeds let me know. We live in an apartment so we can't grow them. They like shade and tend to grow near creeks in nature, though I've seen them on some ridges in brown county that aren't too close to water.
Edit: I think it is spelled pawpaw, and so far no ill effects. I don't think it was ripe because the fruit was white and more firm than a banana (less firm than an apple). When ripe it's supposed to be yellow and mushy. Tastes kinda like a banana. Maybe a mix between a banana and apple.
