I saw “The Fablemans” last night, and it appears that Spielberg (the greatest living American filmmaker) has lost all sense of story, narrative structure, pacing, and editing. His self-indulgent, bloated, tonally inconsistent film makes me feel that perhaps it’s time for the 75 year old to retire on his splendid filmography, before he sinks further films with his recent bad habits. James Mangold is young and excited and focused, and I think he will inject life into this final Indy installment, rather than making it a cloying mess that I believe Spielberg would have at this stage of his career.
