IndianSWE is in India
Post Body

I was born and brought up in India. I spent 23 years of my life in India. I have been living mostly in the US for the last 7.5 years. These are the things that I miss when I am back in India:

  1. Footpaths. Almost every city I have lived in, doesn't have continuous footpaths in India. Half of the time when I am walking on the streets, I am dodging incoming vehicular traffic or other pedestrians.
  2. Traffic lanes. Indian roads does have lanes, but nobody cares about them. Driving on Indian roads after driving in the US is a pain.
  3. Silence. My apartment is practically facing the main road. The only time I hear honking or any type of noise is when the fire truck comes over or if the cops are chasing someone. I can go days without hearing a car horn.
  4. No stray animals on the streets. I have seen a raccoon and a skunk once in the last 7.5 years but that's about it.
  5. Less trash on the streets.
  6. Less public defecation or spitting on the streets.
  7. People with civic sense. People who understand how queues work. People who wait their turns.
  8. No band bhaja bharats or pujaris reciting slokas on a mic or azaans on loud speakers or Christians shouting "Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas" on loud speakers non-stop for 6 hours every day for a whole week before Christmas. Silence. I miss silence a lot when I am in India.
  9. An inclusive culture. The only racism I faced in my life in America was from other immigrants. And also this one crazy old white lady in her 80s who was clearly drugged out of her mind.
  10. Less crowd on the streets, buses & metros.
  11. No power cuts.
  12. People who respect other people's privacy

I love my country, but it has an incredible amount of painful problems.
