If I got a refund on a transaction I made on my VISA credit card, after it has been deactivated, where does the amount go?

Post Body

I had a HDFC Regalia First credit card that I recently had upgraded to a Regalia card. The original card was automatically deactivated once I activated the new upgraded card.

I am about to receive refund for a product that I ordered online several months ago using the original card and still didn't receive the item. The items are in USD since I used it for international purchase in the US. I've contacted the marchant and they say that they're only able to refund to the original method of payment.

I've contacted HDFC as well but they dismissed my question as resolved without even fully understanding what I'm asking.

If I ask the merchant to go ahead and issue the refund will I receive the amount in my account?Considering the account tied to the old card is still active and that old card is listed in my account under inactive cards.

Kindly help.

PS - I am not sure if this is an appropriate question to ask in this sub. I tried posting in IndiaFinance but they apparently don't allow just anyone to make posts. So I'm trying my luck here.

Update - I finally got a confirmation over email from HDFC that it shouldn't be an issue and it should be directly transferred to my new card. And I went ahead and notified the merchant and got the amount in my card in less than 2 days. No hassles.
