So in recent times we always see that movies, actors and various artist become a subject of criticism or harsh reactions owing to certain part or overall project. For example, the whole Padmavati vs Karni Sena or Swara Bhaskar's scene in Veere di Wedding. Since many few years we are seeing that actors make some statements in public that doesn't go well with certain section of public like times when 'India's tolerance' became a hot topic and many actors fell for it. I personally think that with rise of social media, people started becoming well aware of these incidents. Maybe back in 70s to 90s even if a person had been offended, he/she couldn't find anyone else to be offended along with and thus moment died off because lack of unity.
From what I recall, during old times, very few such incidents or issues happened. Once when Milind Soman posed for a shoe brand it irked many people. Marathi stage drama 'Me Nathuram Godse Bolto ahe' got some uprising. But nowadays, once every 2 months comes a movie which stirs the hornet's nest for minute reason. This leads to altering a movie's scene for few seconds or beeping certain word from a dialogue.
Social Justice warriors were not that prominent back in those days. But let's say they were as they are now, which movies, artists or TV serials would have faced their ire. I know that period had many degrading and offensive movies, but movies which had A listed stars or had high profile production houses which could have raised a storm if it had been current time.
