Does a cruise count as reentering the country?

My boyfriend is Canadian and his passport and visa expire in July. He has since gotten a new passport and visa but he will have to leave the country and reenter. We are going on a closed loop cruise from the US to Mexico this month and I was wondering if there is any way for that to count as exiting and reentering the country? I’ve never been on a cruise so I have no idea if they stamp your passport or anything.
