It’s been a long road but I’ve been lucky to see Oppenheimer in 6 different theaters and styles. My first was an opening week sneak peek in a Dolby Atmos theater. I’m glad I saw it in a “non-imax” compare the rest. After that it was a IMAX with laser, 15/70 IMAX at KOP, IMAX dome in Detroit, Cinnimark XD and last night at my local drive in.
By far the 15/70 IMAX showings were worth every second of the drive and being able to pay attention to the little details, it appeared as if I was right there with everyone as the events unfolded in the past. Our local IMAX (*cough LieMax) upgraded right before Oppenheimer came out to with Laser (I saw the very last showing of Transformers pre upgrade and the first showing of Oppenheimer post upgrade) it was still beautiful but seemed a little dull in companies to 15/70 or the Atmos (Dolby vision) theater. It’s a coin toss between the drive in and Cinnimark XD for the least optimal to see. My local Cinnimark had their projector switch to the Barbie movie half ways though said it was a projectionist issue which got us free tickets to see Barbie but quality was it didn’t compare. The drive in to no surprise was the worst, the only thing that made it tolerable was my car audio might had sounded better than any of the IMAX theaters.
So after reading everyone posts / comments leading up to, during and to the present, if you can see it in 15/70 film do it. It really does the film justice and one of my top favorite films of all times. My rankings are:
- IMAX 17/70
- IMAX Dome (15/70)
- IMAX Digital
- Dolby Atmos (Vision)
- Cinnimark XD (I would assume Regal RPX / other “premium” showings)
- Drive In / regular digital.
