This is the actual Executive Order signed by Pritzker.
There are significant vagaries in the definition of essential. Employers of all kinds are using this to justify classifying themselves as essential. For instance, I am in the construction industry. My union (IBEW local 134) has classified our entire work as essential. Everyone working on new construction of condos and office buildings knows that it is absurd to classify our work as essential, and we are all potentially bringing COVID home with us and putting our lives at risk.
Many people have attempted to contact their local police or sheriffs department to report their jobs being kept open when their business is clearly non-essential, and are being ignored. Or told to contact the federal government.
In the end everyone can choose to not work and risk a future layoff, but we shouldn't be put in that position. What is the point of this vague executive order, when even the clearly defined non-essential work goes unpunished when they claim themselves to be essential? How are people forced to work for these companies supposed to report this?
