"the awful practice of linking to subreddits outside of Reddit." Are there exceptions to this judgement?

Linking /r/woooosh is ridiculous. On this we agree. However, is there really never a good reason to proliferate a good subreddit when it uniquely captures the essence of a situation outside Reddit?
