Family on single income - Why buy my own gifts?

One thing my ex wife never could understand is why I didn’t want anything for Xmas.
I had to explain to her that when you operate on a single income, I’m literally giving her money that I made to buy me something I may or may not want, wrapped in false generosity.
So what’s the point?
