Typically when I submit a long comment or one with fancy formatting or try to include math, I have many small typos or bad grammar that I'd like to fix. These are hard to see until I see the comment formatted (e.g., if I forgot to backslash an asterisks used in math instead text is italicized; or the quoted text doesn't come out looking right due to line returns).
Now right now I only have a minute to edit these for formatting and grammar issues after submitting, before I get the message astericksed for being edited (even when I was only fixing typos/grammar I caught myself immediately after posting).
A few possible solutions to this problem that I see:
- (1) a preview button where you can see the comment's text before its submitted.
- (2) adjust the timer that you have to edit a comment based on its length. E.g., for each 50 words you have 1 minute, before an asterisks arises, so a 200 word comment has 4 minutes to be edited before an asterisks.
- (3) a delayed submission option, where you can in your settings delay your comments by say 1-15 minutes before it is visible to others (but you can still edit it all you want). During that time you can edit your comment without an asterisks, but you can see it yourself. This is probably the most difficult to explain and implement and also could have some negative consequences (repeated comments due to delayed posts), so is probably not optimal.
- (4) Just extending the free editing time to 5 minutes would solve all of my problems.
- (5) Post the time of the last edit, next to the asterisks. This way you can edit a post for grammar and if someone later comments on it, people can know if you changed the text before or after the later comments were made.
