Webhook or Streaming API for OAuth applications integrating with Reddit

Applications that integrate with Reddit, be it reddit bots or whatnot, currently can only repeatedly poll for updates to subreddits or posts. This is costly for reddit to repeatedly serve the same data, and ineffective for any sufficiently large scale application to spend all of its API rate limit on polling.
It would be nice to have higher capacity methods of streaming reddit events.
Sure there is solutions like https://rockets.cc, but it would he nice to have a first party solution.
Reddit already has a application registration process. This would be the next logical step for allowing third party access to Reddit data.
