Hey all,
I interviewed for Local 48’s Inside program yesterday and walked out feeling very good about everything I had said. I generally interview very well and I didn’t think yesterday was an exception. This morning I got ranked in the 300s which, while disheartening, has me a little bit more confused than anything. Confused about what I could have done better, but also what exactly I should do from this point.
I have good baseline tool knowledge and trade adjacent experience, some electrical, but mostly auto. I had talked with a couple of other pre-apprentices who are partway through the process and their experience didn’t seem too different from my own (many of which scored substantially higher). I got an additional email saying that my interview committee enjoyed meeting me alongside some information as far as how to score higher on a re-interview. I don’t know if that email is automatically sent to everyone that ranks low, but it honestly seemed targeted towards me.
I don’t dislike the idea of working as a material handler to qualify for the re-interview, I am just not financially able to due to the pay cut. I could perhaps take pre-apprenticeship classes, but the local says remote learning courses don’t contribute to the process of re-interviewing; which would be my only option because I have a full time job.
Anyways, the only other thing I could possibly think of is finding a non-union electrical job and re-applying after I’ve worked there for the required time.
That, or, I could perhaps apply for the Limited Energy and transfer into Inside after I’ve finished the apprenticeship. I’ve heard that Limited Energy is less competitive so that’s why I mention it.
Anyways, just hoping for some guidance. I’m committed to going this route, I find the work interesting, and I would like to make this trade my career, but I feel like I just hit a huge roadblock with no way to go around it. Anything advice helps.
Hey, where could I find more info on this pre apprenticeship course to bump up your base pay for a material handler? I would like to do material handling to get in as an apprentice but the starting wage is so low that I don't think I could sustain it.

Thanks. That seems like a reliable path. Working as a material handler for over a year sounds tough on the money side but if you're able to get a $5 pay bump for it, it may be feasible. Thanks for the info!
Congrats on getting in, how do you like it so far?
