How do you make iRacing the most fun for you?

I'm concerned that I'm going down a rabbit hole of obligation. I don't really want to make this a job and when I get out of the seat I'd like to feel good mentally. Am I playing the wrong game? Do you consider it a game? Is it an adventure? A challenge? What brings you back to it? Do you race with friends? Did you make friends in the game? I could use your advice. Thanks.
