Google maps stops giving directions while driving

When I use google maps, it works great for the first couple minutes or if I keep the phone unlocked. If I lock it, however, it silently stops giving directions after a couple minutes. I need to unlock my phone, and if it's not active, switch to Google Maps. Only then will my directions continue.
Anyone else have this issue?
