Icons aren't transparent when theme activated on phone?

I was just testing making a new theme with icons that have 50% opacity on the backgrounds. I was using Photoshop CS6, and saved them as pngs just like the original icon files, but the icons are opaque when activated using Winterboard.
What am I doing wrong?
