iCloud syncing too slow. Can I manually transfer photos?

There are 1800 photos left to be synced. It’s taking ages. Can I manually transfer those to my Mac with a cable? Will it make it faster? Any settings to change? I’m new to iCloud so any help would be appreciated. Thanks
