Building a growing rack out of PVC: Cost Saving or Doomed for failure

Basically, I'm thinking of building a growing rack for microgreens out of PVC because it'd probably be cheaper overall
Does anyone have any experience with this? Would this be a stupid move because it'd be brittle and break apart or is it worth it more so than spending maybe even 4 times the cost on a set of shelving?
