I’ve been cycling pretty regularly since the start of this year. I’ve only broken a couple of bones in my body (near the little toe till now). The constant near death experiences pump a lot of adrenaline into my system and are really good for getting up to speed when some asshole decides to swerve in front of you and suddenly stop on the side of the road.
Although there’s no bike lanes maintained, cops have been good to me. They let me off early when VIP blockades happen (I hit more than 40 for the 75 seconds that no motor vehicles except me were on the road). They also don’t give a shit if you drive on the wrong side (or at all).
Lastly, If you crash into anyone, they also don’t really give a shit. Bike and auto guys look at who crashed into them, realise it’s a cycle and then understand bad luck and polluted air will more than balance out this karma.
Speed breakers are also a bit of a bitch, but I just slingshot around drivers there (get a mountain bike if this is common near where you bike). The random smattering of sewage also acts as an efficient cooling system for me and the cycle. Pedestrians are a good group of people to terrorise, especially as they’re the only group you can really do that too. Kids are dumb though, so don’t target them.
Make sure to hydrate and wear a helmet if y’all plan to join the cult. If y’all are planning to make a positive change around biking culture, folks like HYD cycling mayor bring awareness and support political change.
Dude I swear to god this is so relatable. One time I almost got squished to death by a bus that was coming behind me. He clearly saw me in front of the bus but the moron decided to squeeze me like a packet of ketchup.
The worst thing was, the bus was gaining on me from one side and there was a flyover on the other side with a small pavement. I just jumped off my cycle and dead lifted it onto the pavement. That experience was traumatising, but I still do cycle regardless.
Hyderabad is definitely a death trap for cyclists if you aren't careful.
