Problem replacing HVAC/air handler due to small attic space - advice requested!
Post Body

Hello, we live in Florida so needless to say the timing of this is horrible. I can provide more detail if needed. We have an 8 year old 5 ton Lennox unit for our 2800 square foot two story bedroom house. Even at max efficiency, the upstairs was never properly cooled but that’s besides the point. This Lennox unit has a broken/leaking coil, we have had that confirmed by three different reputable companies in the area. There was a class action lawsuit against Lennox because this particular coil seems to fail regularly, again our bad luck. We are ordering a new coil which is on back order, meanwhile requiring weekly replacement to the Freon bc the leak is so bad. Okay that’s not the end of this problem though. We looked at getting the whole unit replaced (AC and air handler) and every company we have asked says our builders did not leave enough space for the larger air handlers which are more common now. We have about 52 inches by 28 inches of space in the attic. My question for the experts is: what company makes an air handler for a 5 ton unit that can fit in this space? If there is no air handler that can, is putting a 4 ton unit in an option? What other options are there besides tearing apart our attic and moving the trusses further apart so that a larger handler can fit? (homeowners insurance isn’t covering any of this by the way). Thanks for the help!
