When a filter needs to be replaced every 90 days, is that 90 days of runtime, or 90 days literally?

Asking because in some seasons, the blower won't be running at all, while in winter and summer it could be on very often. I have a smart thermostat that keeps track of actual runtime on the blower and reminds me to change the filter at specific intervals set (30, 45, 60, 90, I generally have it set to 45 and change it as soon as I'm alerted).

Edit - it's a SEER 16 heat pump with a York 2 ton ECM air handler using 16"x25"x1"if it matters.
