Maintenance guy lazy??

I have a Trane XV18 AC. Maintenance guy comes out, as soon as he sees that it’s a Variable speed system he claims there’s no need to hook up to it and check refrigerant levels.
He says the system would tell if anything was low, and because he’s seeing a 23 degree split everything is fine… does this sound like BS to any of you?
