How In The World Am I Supposed To Remove This Filter?

I recently purchased a house and want to replace the filter and discovered this issue with my setup. I can only get it out about 4 inches before it hits this PVC pipe. I'm at a complete loss at what to do to remove this thing easily. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.
