AC doesn't start due to thermostat not working

The thermostat always shows 71 and when I change the cooling setpoint goes back to 85, is it fixable? I changed batteries but same issue. Is there a possible issue with AC unit? Would it be so hard to replace the thermostat myself with google one or something modern?
