Freon leak in winter and high energy bill

Post Body
We called a tech out because the first time we turned on our AC after winter it was not blowing out cold air. Turns out we have a hole in our line and zero freon.
The tech said that our bill could have been extra high over the past two months (it was) because of this.
My question is, how does that work if we weren’t using the AC but only heating? It’s not like the cooling system was struggling to keep cool.
Thank you!
