Minor thing that's always bothered me

So in the first movie when Stoick is about to look for the Dragons nest Gobber volunteers to go with. Stoick tells Gobber to stay and train some new recruits. Gobber says "Oh, perfect. And, while I'm busy, Hiccup can cover the stall. Molten steel, razor-sharp blades, lots of time to himself. What could possibly go wrong?"
The part bothers me is that Hiccup still would've had access to those things if Gobber had left. Hiccup still would've been left alone if Gobber went with Stoick and the others.
