I am selfish. I admit it.
I focus on myself first and think about the things I want.
You too, eh?
I get it has a negative vibe and no one wants to be called âselfishâ. Even the dictionary starts off by admonishing itâs âconcerned excessively or exclusively with oneselfâ.
But weâre not talking about that kind of selfish. Short term & shallow minded.
Weâre talking about radical selfishness.
Weâre talking about:
- putting yourself first
- pursuing your dreams
- giving back
It means you have time for yourself and donât feel guilty about it.
Time to meditate. To learn. To workout. To work on personal projects.
To say ânoâ.
Weâre talking about having our shit together; idle time doesnât mean youâre not productive.
"Time you enjoy wasting was not wasted" - John Lennon
If youâre hearing what Iâm saying, I can give you a small ritual you can use to start:
Choose one important thing, completely unrelated to whatâs urgent, and decide on three small steps youâll take towards it in the next 3 days. 7 days. 21 days.
If you really wanna lock it in and catalyze your own growth, create a group with this common goal.
Invite family, friends, and colleagues and keep each other accountable.
Thereâs strength in numbers, after all. Peer pressure too.
There are endless books, videos, and podcasts about building habits... but strip away the fat and the formula is always the same:
Small Milestones Small Victories Support = Success
We grow when weâre honest about what makes us happy and make time to pursue those things.
Never apologize for taking time for whatâs important, and do those things without compromise. Donât let anyone tell you that focusing on yourself or your needs over someone elseâs is a negative trait. Itâs not.
Oh, and if you donât know who to start an accountability group with, why not Zoidberg?
I mean me. PM me. Is wut I du.
Much love,
Dani
P.S. I like the analogy of a golden castle built in a slum. If youâre rich and powerful, but you canât leave your house without encountering an abhorrent and damaged reality, have you built a castle or a cage? The radically selfish man raises the entire world around him, so he may roam it as he pleases and not find himself facing a reality of collective failure.
