Chapter 2: Karen/Johnny Connection
Post Body

I recently just reread Chapter 2 and I noticed that Karen and Johnny have very similar life situations:

  1. Johnny's water heater doesn't work and he feels "freezing". Karen is also described as feeling the same way in Zampano's retelling of events.
  2. Johnny feels angry for no reason that he's aware of, and Karen is angry because Navy mentions "Delial" in his sleep. Later, it seems that Pelafina's locket is what makes Johnny angry.
  3. Karen uses the phrase "out of the blue" when bringing up Delial. From what I can remember, Johnny uses that phrase a lot, maybe more than Zampano or the Navidson family.

It sort-of makes sense that they would, if we consider Delial's importance to Navy and Pelafina's importance to Johnny, and that they both give Navy and Johnny uncomfortable feelings when in proximity to related objects or events. Johnny even feels queasy after recalling the Birds of Paradise story, wondering if there's a greater story that he can't see (which could be in relation to either his memory of Pelafina leaving or the mother/child story). It's possible Karen reminds Johnny of his mother somehow and his resulting queasiness could be related to that, too. Then again, it could be an undeclared edit from Johnny, Zampano, or Pelafina.

I'm wondering now if there are more places where Karen and Johnny experience similar events in their respective stories. Have y'all noticed anything between the two that could be important? If you haven't, do you think this detail could be important in some way?
