Hello fellow House of Leaves fans. I recently came across SHRIEK: AN AFTERWORD, a novel by Jeff Vandermeer. Technically it's part of the Ambergris trilogy, but as the first novel in that is all short stories this one can stand alone. The premise is we are reading Janice Shriek's account of her brother Duncan Shriek. Duncan is a historian interested in the lore of the mysterious town where they live, following in their father's footsteps. Janice is an art gallery owner and amateur art historian.
The reason this book reminds me of the House of Leaves dedication: as we read the book from the very first page we get 'footnotes' of Duncan writing back to Janice and yet they cannot communicate. Janice knows that Duncan is lost, disappeared for the last time, and Duncan is editing her typewritten manuscript after it's heavily implied that she could be dead. You are reading the deeply personal conversation between siblings, taking the semblance and disguise of a memoir and biography.
