I have been caring for my mil for a little over a year. We live in her house with her. The last couple months (since she has been in hospice) have been hard. I finally told her I resign, but will stay until she goes into a skilled nursing facility. She obviously wants to stay in her home, but I have to stop for my mental health, she has COPD, emphysema and cognitive heart failure. She's a huge fall risk as well. She needs 24-7 care, which she is not approved for thru IHSS. So I've explained to her once we move she can't stay here alone, and with her only being approved for 4 hrs a day another worker won't be enough help. What happens if she refuses to go into a skilled nursing facility? She can't be left alone? I feel bad about the whole situation. She doesn't remember talking about the nursing facility and constantly thinks she just needs a new worker. Any advice??
I donโt know where you live, but if she refuses to go to a nursing home and is unsafe at home, itโs an APS case. Your social worker and the care team in general can help having a frank conversation with her that they are mandated reporters and while they would love to help make sure she has the care she needs, if she refuses, they are mandated to report it.
