I was immediately impressed when I saw him in person at the 2023 Ocala Spring sale. Given the way Lanni locked in on him I knew he was destined for California & Bob Baffert. As I followed his progress, I became convinced that, no offense to Muth, Baffert had hand picked Maymun to be his next, er, KD winner upon the "expected," "Churchill welcomes back..." in 2024. Ugh, no need to unpack all that again, but it's fair to say this physcially imposing son of Frosted would've undoubtedly made that return a triumphant one.
Remember, a mere 3 weeks after finally debuting in January & setting the top Equibase figure for his crop to that point, he entered into a head-to-head, winner takes priority showdown against his then stable mate & current Pegasus invitee, Imagination. Poor Imagination unfortunately, for him, FAFO. Surely that meant Maymun would hit the trail, right, KD or not? He blitzed his workouts over the next two months & then, nothing. Nothing at all. How could there be no word about such a talented Baffert colt, especially one with the proven potential to dominate his peers?
Well, after a 7 month break, Baffert had him back on the tab for 4 works in November, capped with bullet defining 4F in 46.6. But don't be awed by just that one because all 4 were, in fact, blazing fast. I reallt hope this means we'll see him make his 4yo debut soon. It's been a really long time since a horse I was so sure of just up & disappeared. It'll be a sight if he's somehow actually gotten even stronger.
