Is it safe to say that Scream is the best, most consistently watchable slasher franchise? I think so.
First off, I feel like Sidney is the greatest final girl to ever grace the big screen. Not only is she resourceful, intelligent and badass, but Neve Campbell's performance makes for one of the most likeable final girls imo.
The first Scream is the benchmark for meta commentary in horror. The movie is iconic, quotable and extremely rewatchable. It probaly features the most famous horror movie opening sequence of all time.
Scream 2 is great, not my favourite of the sequels, but I did like the college setting and how it showed the effects of the first movies events on Sidney. Dewey and Gale had some great moments too, the recording studio scene was great! Sucks that Randy died though.
Even Scream 3, arguable the worst in the franchise, still has solid entertainment value, and has a dark portrayal of some of the horrors of the entertainment industry (ironic that Harvey Weinstein produced it)
Scream 4 is a solid return to form. The movie features clever use of the found footage genre and pokes fun at the remake trend, while still being a sort of remake. The opening was fun and did surprise me the first time I viewed it. Only thing I didn't like was how ugly the movie was, not sure why Wes Craven chose to put that weird yellow filter over the movie.
Scream (2022) is my favourite of the sequels. It's fresh, relevant to modern horror fans, and finally gives us a version of Dewey that isn't always the punchline of a joke. It's beautifully shot and features some of the goriest Kills in the franchise.
This is the only horror franchise that is a yearly rewatch for me. Any other mega Scream fans here?
