I just finished watching The Deep House (not great, but a cool premise and creepy visuals). The boyfriend, unsurprisingly, sucked; he was obnoxious, selfish, and ignored all his girlfriend’s warnings. And it got me thinking. I can’t even count the number of horror movies I’ve seen where the boyfriend or husband was either 1) the killer, 2) a total piece of shit, or 3) just a super annoying dick who doesn’t take the female lead seriously, dismisses her, makes her feel crazy, etc. There’s Scream, Paranormal Activity, You’re Next, It Follows, Fresh!, Midsommar… I could go on.
On the other hand, I can’t think of hardly any movies where the male partner was actually a decent person. It definitely seems to be the exception, not the rule. I can think of… one. Ed Warren (Patrick Wilson) from the Conjuring movies is a good husband. Ummm… I’m struggling to think of a second. Chief Brody in Jaws. 😅
Anyone else kind of tired of this lazy trope?

Everyone should have a partner like that. I’m a lesbian and I’d probably still date him.
