I just picked up the Scream Factory release of Cursed and I’m giving it a rewatch for the first time in a couple years. I think it might be genius.
I think Williamson and Craven were always making a comedy… a comedy that was a send up of cheesy 50s monster movies. And the Weinsteins paid for it because they thought they were getting another horror juggernaut like Scream.
The bad acting and dialog, the relationship drama, over the top stereotypical characters, cameos, dramatic zooms, the music stings — I think the humor is that everyone’s playing it so straight when it all feels so intentionally bad; it’s a big budget CW melodrama that just happens to revolve around werewolves — a ridiculous mashing of two different things, but it plays it like it’s totally natural, like “why wouldn’t all these things work together?”
Its a day time soap opera that also has a supernatural monster…and everyone’s playing it 100% straight. That’s the funny part.
