I found the glycerin at michaels craft store in the baking aisle. It's food grade (they sell it for restoring frosting consistency) only 2 0z for 2 dollars. Boiled and washed the tobacco til the water ran clear through it, dried it over night. I just made three batches (each batch about a large bowl pack, /-) I have more flavors, but I decided to start with Lemon and orange, and for the third I made a mix of lemon and orange for a citrus blend. Each one I used slightly varying amounts of glycerin, honey and flavoring, but stuck close to the base of 2.5 tsp of glycerin, 2.5 tsp of honey, and 2 tsp of extract. I'm letting them sit for about 24 hours now, might do a test run later tonight. Please let me know if you see anything that I might have done wrong or that you might raise an eyebrow at.
Updates to follow!
UPDATE #1: I waited about 3 hours and 45 minutes with the shisha sitting in an empty tin I reused. It isn't thick or gooey but it is juicy. Since it's very fine pipe tobacco I'm worried it might burn a little quick. I just packed a bowl of the Lemon orange combo I made, have placed a coal ontop, and so far the flavor is pretty light. I might have to add more extract next batch. I am noticing that it will burn somewhat quick, so I'm keeping a single coal around the edges. Otherwise, it's a good smoke. No real pipe tobacco taste, and decent (not great) clouds. So glad this wasn't a failure at all. So far it's great. Now I just need to find a local place that carries more extracts of more exotic flavors.
UPDATE #2: 30 mins into smoking, its not harsh, haven't had to rotate the coal any more than usual shisha (AF is what I normally smoke because of price and availability). Putting the coal in the middle does not burn it too fast as I first thought, seems to be doing well. The flavor is still a bit weaker than what I want, but meh. For a first attempt this came out really well. It was so much easier than I was expecting it to be too. :D I strongly suggest if you have the means or the curiosity to try and make your own shisha at this point. It really was very easy.
UPDATE #3: Smoked beautifully. Didn't even start hinting at harshness until halfway through the second coal (I have a simple small Mya hookah, with the same bowl it came with. Three kings coals, the smaller ones). keeping the coal in a triangle rotation pattern kept it fresh and flowing. The smoke actually picked up and was as good as when I smoke AF. All in all this was a success, I'm not sure whether or not it saves me any money, but it's nice to be making and smoking my own shisha. It just means I have the ability to tinker with flavors, balance and mix them to my tastes. Or if I buy a bulk box of shisha of one flavor, I can mix in my own extra flavors to change it up. Sorry, just excited and thinking of what I can do with this. I will be trying the other flavors which have slightly different consistency then the one I smoked for this. Hope you all enjoyed, and consider making your own shisha and sharing the results!
